Kootenay Lake School District celebrates the Love of the Arts!
The arts are powerful and transformative components of every student’s learning. For the next few weeks, the Kootenay Lake School District is bringing the arts into focus by focusing on the arts!
In coming together to support and celebrate arts programming around the school district, student art events and programming will be the focus across multiple disciplines including music, dance, film, theatre and visual arts in an effort to raise awareness about the importance of arts education.
“We will connect our students to meaningful, engaging arts experiences in their classrooms, schools, and in communities across the district.” says Superintendent Dr. Christine Perkins.
The celebration will kick off this weekend highlighting the performing arts sector. In collaboration with The Capitol Theatre, students from Wildflower, South Nelson, HUME and Trafalgar ABED will perform in an Indigenous Cultural Celebration at the Capitol on Saturday January 26th at 4 pm. All parents, students and the wider community are invited to attend. Tickets are $10 for adults and youth are free.
Visual art displays, gallery art walks, community mural making and story-telling events are scheduled throughout the month, across schools in the district and will highlight cultural celebrations including Chinese New Year, Carnival D’Hiver and Valentine’s Day.
“We know the arts have such a broad and powerful impact on our society, so we must continue to raise awareness of its importance and influence in our schools and beyond.” adds Dr. Perkins.
As part of focusing on the arts, community partnerships with the Legion-Branch 51, the Capitol Theatre, the Langham Gallery and many local professional artists sharing their craft and knowledge in the classroom setting, these collaborations will further enrich the learning experiences for students.
A comprehensive schedule of events has been submitted to the newspaper highlighting the various activities that encourage community participation, as well as the multitude of arts programming happening in the schools. Check with your school today!
