Assistant Superintendent Deanna Holitzki Retiring
School District No. 8 (Kootenay Lake) has announced the retirement of Deanna Holitzki, Assistant Superintendent, effective November 2026. Deanna’s retirement concludes a distinguished career in public education spanning 36 years, 28 of those in SD8.
Deanna is a respected educational leader dedicated to supporting student success, advancing inclusive practices, and strengthening services for students, staff, and families. She helped shape many of the programs and initiatives that continue to benefit learners across the district.
Deanna transitioned into the role of assistant superintendent in 2023 after serving for 12 years as director of instruction and director of human resources. Her leadership experience in SD8 is informed by 21 years as an educator serving students and families as a teacher, vice-principal, and principal in schools in Nelson, Salmo, Nakusp, and Abbotsford.
“I would like to sincerely thank Deanna for her years of service to the SD8 community,” said Superintendent Trish Smillie.
“Her ability to lead from the heart has guided significant improvements in our delivery of inclusive education, early childhood education and child care, healthy schools, human resources, and school leadership. Our district is grateful for Deanna’s years of devoted service.”
Reflecting on her career, Deanna expressed gratitude for the people and experiences that shaped her career.
“I am grateful for the experiences, relationships, and opportunities that have shaped my journey in education. SD8 has been an exceptional district in which to work and lead, where employees care deeply about students, and where commitments to learning, inclusion, and belonging are seen every day. B.C. educator Dr. Shelley Moore has said, ‘When we start with strengths, we create opportunities.’ Throughout my career in SD8, I have seen the profound impact that occurs when students are celebrated and encouraged to pursue their dreams. I am thankful for the many students, colleagues, mentors, and leaders who have inspired me along the way."
The search for a successor to Assistant Superintendent Holitzki is now underway. The successful candidate will be announced once the recruitment and hiring process is completed.
