SD8 Announces New Leadership in International Education

School District No. 8 (Kootenay Lake) announces the appointment of Kent Tamblyn as district principal – International Education, effective December 2023. This transition follows the retirement of District Principal Paul Luck.

New Chair and Vice-Chair Elected to SD8 Board of Education

School District No. 8 (Kootenay Lake) announced the election by acclamation of a new chair and vice-chair of the Board of Education at the inaugural board meeting held in Nelson, B.C., on November 14. School Trustee Dawn Lang was elected uncontested as the new chair, moving into the role after serving one year as vice-chair. School Trustee Julie Bremner was elected uncontested to the position of vice-chair, her first term in the position.

SD8 Wins National Award for Communications and Engagement

School District No.8 (Kootenay Lake) has won an Award of Distinction 2023 BRAVO! Award from the Canadian Association of Communicators in Education (CACE) for its 2024-2029 Strategic Plan Engagement.

The award recognizes and honours exemplary work in public relations, communications, marketing and engagement in school board communications across Canada each year.

SD8 Teacher Wins Prime Minister’s Award

School District No. 8 (Kootenay Lake) Teacher Sean Marechal has received the Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching Excellence. Marechal teaches Grade 9 and 10 students in the Valhalla Wilderness Program at W.E. Graham School in the Village of Slocan.

SD8 Appoints Secretary-Treasurer

The School District No.8 (Kootenay Lake) Board of Education has appointed Cathy MacArthur as the new secretary-treasurer and chief financial officer for SD8, effective September 12, 2023. She was hired as manager of finance for the district in April 2023 and served as interim secretary-treasurer since May 2023.

New Leadership at Nelson Wildflower School

School District No. 8 (Kootenay Lake) announced today that Dr. Nick Graves will be appointed as the Principal of Nelson Wildflower beginning January 1, 2024. 

Dr. Graves is currently principal of Lucerne Elementary Secondary School and Arrow Lakes Online Learning School in School District No.10 (Arrow Lakes) where he has served in a leadership role since 2017. Before this, he served as principal of BC Offshore Schools and as vice-principal and teacher at an independent First Nations school in Bella Coola.

The first day of kindergarten is an exciting day for any young student beginning an educational journey that will continue into their teens. Now BC families can accompany their children to kindergarten no matter where they live, work or travel, and students can learn at a pace and rhythm that completely suits their needs.
