New Principal Appointed at Salmo Elementary School

School District No. 8 (Kootenay Lake) has announced that Mr. Roman Wyllie has been appointed principal of Salmo Elementary School, effective August 1, 2026.

“I am pleased to welcome Vice-Principal Wyllie into his new role as school principal. He brings strong experience in the classroom and as a school leader, along with a clear commitment to student well-being. I am confident that Salmo families will find his warmth, enthusiasm and expertise a great asset to the school and to the community,” said Superintendent Trish Smillie.

Mr. Wyllie has served as an adjunct professor with the University of British Columbia West Kootenay Teacher Education Program and has taught in several school districts across British Columbia, including School District No. 81 (Fort Nelson), School District No. 51 (Boundary), and School District No. 69 (Qualicum).

He began his teaching career in SD8 as a practicum teacher at L.V. Rogers Secondary School in 2014. In 2023, he returned to the district as vice-principal at L.V. Rogers Secondary, where he has served for the past three years.

Mr. Wyllie will take over from Principal Rod Giles, who is retiring at the end of this school year.

“I wish Principal Giles a wonderful retirement and thank him deeply for more than 45 years of service to children, families, staff and communities as an educator and school leader,” said Superintendent Smillie.
