SD8 Board of Education Approves 2026-2027 Budget

The School District No. 8 (Kootenay Lake) Board of Education unanimously approved its budget for the 2026–2027 school year at the May 12 Board meeting.

The budget bylaw totals $88.2 million for the upcoming school year, an increase of approximately $630,000 over the current year’s amended budget.

Despite projected declining enrolment, the district’s budget maintains a focus on classroom supports, student learning and strategic priorities outlined in the district’s 2024–2029 Strategic Plan

“I am pleased that the Board was able to approve a balanced budget that continues to prioritize supports for students while maintaining responsible financial stewardship and stability for the district,” said Board Chair Susan Chew.

The district projects enrolment of 4,509 full-time equivalent students for the 2026–2027 school year, compared to 4,618 in the current year, a decline of 109 students.

The budget maintains classroom supports and includes continued investment in teachers, educational assistants and student services. Educational assistant staffing is budgeted to increase despite lower projected enrolment.

“This budget reflects the district’s ongoing commitment to student learning, well-being and inclusive learning environments for all students,” said Superintendent Trish Smillie.

All B.C. school districts are required to approve a balanced budget by June 30 each year. The SD8 budget focuses on educational resources for student achievement and success outlined in the district’s strategic plan as required by the provincially mandated Framework for Enhancing Student Learning.
