International Education - Transportation Dream Team

The end of January and the beginning of February saw the departure and arrival of international students. Understandably, in a time of COVID we have seen restrictions by airlines and immigration, along with various local and global requirements to keep everyone safe. These complications mean it really takes a team to have students safely return to home countries as well as arrive to their Canadian school communities as smoothly as possible.

As we all know, arriving in the Kootenays during the winter months adds an extra layer of challenge. February saw students arriving on the cusp of a winter storm. The International Education team would like to thank the SD8 Transportation team for their immediate and supportive response to the uncertainty created by a winter storm that led to Castlegar airport flight cancellations.

Chris Kerr, Lisa Phillips and especially Patrick (Pat) Thast responded quickly with support and an alternate plan for transporting students by air and ground from various locations to their school communities. Home parents and agents share in our gratitude to our own SD8 transportation experts for their timely and knowledgeable support that eased everyone’s worry and uncertainty when winter weather struck. Thank you team!

Double-duty in Transportation

Carol Morton our Assistant Transportation Coordinator, and Bill Connely our newest Mechanic are both incredibly busy with their new positions and keeping the buses rolling.

Recently we have been been struggling with driver shortages to cover the many routes of the district and these two have stepped up and managed to jump in the driver seat from time to time making sure our kids get to and from school safely. Thanks to you both, Carol and Bill!

Getting COVID-19 Rapid Tests to Staff and Students

Rapid tests have been distributed to all staff as well as families and caregivers of students at multiple schools across the district.

Russell Warwick and various Operations staff set up workstations in the Nelson Warehouse to sort and repackage test kits for distribution. A huge shout out to Russell Warwick as this was an incredible amount of work.

More information about SD8’s Proof of Vaccination Administrative Procedure including information about rapid testing is available in our FAQ.

LVR Bombers and Salmo Falcons Compete in Provincial Basketball Championships

The LV Rogers Secondary Senior Boys 3A Basketball team is at the  B.C. School Sports 3A Boys Basketball Provincial Tournament in Langley, March 8-13. The boys have had a fantastic season so far, led by head coach Ryan MacKinnon.

"I consider school sport the 'great equalizer'. It provides opportunities for many of our students who may not be able to afford community/club programs," said Coach MacKinnon.

"We are so proud of Mr. Mackinnon and all the boys on the team for this awesome accomplishment and are so excited to have them represent the LVR community in Langley!" said LVR Vice Principal Danielle Klassen.

The Salmo Falcons Junior Boys 1A basketball team also competed at the Provincials between February 26 and March 1, where they played their hearts out and represented their home community and school extremely well in their first time competing at the provincial level.

“Over the past ten years I have coached a number of senior varsity and junior varsity teams, and I can honestly say that the commitment, passion, and talent on this team is of the highest order. The guys have played every game this season embodying the three "R's" of Falcons basketball: Respect, Resilience, and the Right way. I could not be more proud of their accomplishments,” said their coach, Salmo Secondary Teacher Shelby Anderson.

“This is bigger than the school, it’s the whole community,” said Salmo Secondary School Principal Jon Francis. "We couldn't be prouder."

Go Bombers! Way to go Falcons! You can watch games live on pay-per-view and see tournament results at the Provincial Tournament Site.
