Board of Education Meeting Highlights – May 12, 2026

Career Development Continuous Learning Report

District Principal Tamara Malloff presented the Career Development Continuous Learning Report 2025–2026, highlighting SD8’s ongoing work to prepare students to graduate with options for their future life and career goals. The report outlined efforts to strengthen career exploration, experiential learning, graduation pathway planning, dual credit and trades opportunities, and supports for priority learners. The presentation also highlighted partnerships with post-secondary institutions and community organizations, along with initiatives designed to help students make informed decisions about education, training and future careers.

Cycling Education Presentation

Representatives from Nelson and Area Community Transportation (NACT) presented a proposed cycling education initiative designed to support safe, age-appropriate active transportation learning for students across the Nelson area. The presentation outlined a framework focused on cycling knowledge, skills and culture, while also emphasizing environmental awareness, healthy lifestyles and road safety. NACT discussed opportunities for collaboration with SD8, including support for school cycling programs, Bike to School initiatives, cycling infrastructure around schools and potential funding for equipment, professional development and program delivery.

2026–2027 Annual Budget Bylaw

The Board approved the 2026–2027 Annual Budget Bylaw, supporting continued investment in student learning, well-being and school operations across the district. Secretary-Treasurer Cathy MacArthur presented the final budget, which reflects ongoing efforts to align district resources with strategic priorities while responding to enrolment trends, inflationary pressures and rising operational costs.

The budget maintains support for classroom learning, student services and school-based staffing while continuing to prioritize safe, inclusive and caring learning environments.

Student Trustee Reports

Crawford Bay Elementary-Secondary School (CBESS) – Student Trustee Hamilton

CBESS students have been involved in a variety of environmental, arts and leadership activities throughout the spring. Students are continuing work on a school mural alongside a local Indigenous artist and parent, creating artwork connected to nature and the school community. Classes have also been deepening environmental learning through regular trips to nearby wetlands and a field experience with a wolverine tracker.

Graduation fundraising efforts have exceeded expectations through bake sales, gift baskets, a craft fair and a bottle drive, while students also participated in an Earth Day community cleanup and a school-wide Lip Sync Battle fundraiser hosted by the Leadership Club.

J.V. Humphries Secondary School (JVH) – Student Trustee Kinnear

JVH student parliament has been preparing to welcome incoming grade 7 students who will join the high school wing in September. Plans include a student-led question-and-answer session and school tours to help younger students feel comfortable transitioning into secondary school.

Outdoor education students are preparing for an upcoming canoe trip along Slocan Lake, including route planning, meal preparation and equipment organization. Students have also been participating in a community drama production at the Langham Theatre, with opening performances selling out.

Kootenay River Secondary School (KRSS) – Student Trustee Klassen

KRSS students recently completed third quarter studies and received midterm report cards as the school moves into the final months of the school year. Student council initiatives for Mental Health Awareness Month included hiding positive affirmation messages around the school to encourage student engagement and well-being.

The school has also seen strong participation in extracurricular activities, including esports tournaments, soccer, track and field and a new Outdoor Adventures Club focused on beginner outdoor recreation and appreciation of the local environment. Student council election activities are also underway.

L.V. Rogers Secondary School (LVR) – Student Trustee Andersen

LVR’s Jazz Band earned gold at the BC Interior Jazz Festival in April, while the school’s dance program recently completed a successful flower fundraiser supporting student activities.

Spring athletics are underway, with both rugby teams competing in early season games and tournaments. Students also recognized Vice Principal Mr. Wyllie, who will become principal of Salmo Elementary School and will be missed by the LVR school community.

Mount Sentinel Secondary School (MSS) – Student Trustee Keyes

Mount Sentinel students continue to participate in a wide range of arts, athletics and leadership opportunities. Graduation students are organizing the second annual Show and Shine fundraiser later this month, featuring community activities including a pancake breakfast, barbecue and vehicle showcase.

The Academy Production and Media program is preparing its year-end theatrical production, Love and Information, while also celebrating recent student recognition at provincial film festivals. Meanwhile, the golf team has been participating in regional tournaments and grade 12 students recently completed scholarship adjudication presentations in support of post-secondary planning.
